The Sanskrit term Bhastrika denotes ‘bellows’. Thus it can be translated in English as bellows breath.

While practicing this pranayama, a ‘shee’ or ‘sheet’ sound is produced during inhalation. The Sanskrit word Kari means ‘which produces’. Therefore this pranayama can be defined as the Pranayama which produces the sound ‘sheet’.
